Billy Lewis (1987-1991)


Billy Lewis took Wheeler High School and its basketball program by storm! He was a three-year starter, and he had a 25 point career average while at WHS. He was Region Player of the Year in 1990-1991 and helped lead his team to the State Quarterfinals during that same year.

After graduating from Wheeler, Billy attended Life University. While there, he was the all-time leader in Points, Rebounds, Assists and Steals, as well as Field Goals and Free Throw Made. He also had the highest career 3-point field goal percentage of 45%. In 1993 he made the Southeast Region All-Freshman Team; in 1994, 1995, and 1996 he made the All-Southeast Region Team; and, in 1996 he was named Southeast Region Player of the Year. In 1994 Billy was named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team, and he was the leading scorer in that year's Tournament. He was also an NAIA All American in 1994, 1995, and 1996. NAIA also named him to its 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2012.

Among his other accolades, Billy received the following:

  • Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award (1994)
  • USA Basketball All-Tournament Team (1995)
  • College Sports Magazine Pre-Season Player of the Year (1995)
  • Dick Vitale's College Basketball Pre-Season Player of theYear (1995)

In 1996 Life University retired Billy's jersey (Number 5), and in 2021 he was inducted into its Hall of Fame.

Following his college career, Billy played for ART Dusseldorf and led the German Division Ill League in Scoring (1996-1997). In 1997 he was a Free Agent and acquired by the Atlanta Hawks. Billy retired in 1997.

Billy lives in Tulsa, OK with his wife Alma and works with students in the Tulsa Public Schools.
